Spurs were standard equipment for cowboys. They attached to the heel of the boot. They had a metal shank, usually with a small serrated wheel attached. This was so the cowboy could give a stronger leg cue to the horse. Note the heart design on these leather and metal spurs.
(For the sake of these chronicles cowboys means male or female as both often worked side by side doing the same tasks)
